Description

Pharmacology and mechanism of effect:

Maca: maca is an adaptogenic plant. Adaptogens generally support the body in dealing with physiological, biochemical and psychological stress factors, including changes that occur during the perimenopausal and postmenopausal years. Australian research involving perimenopausal and postmenopausal women has revealed that a concentrated maca preparation stimulates the body’s own production of oestrogens and lowers the concentrations of stress hormones, such as cortisol and the adrenocorticotropic hormone. It is worth noting that maca does not contain oestrogens or other hormones, and can therefore be a safe alternative to hormone replacement therapy. It has been suggested that the mechanism of action is that the plant sterols that are present may have a stimulating effect on the hypothalamus, hypophysis, adrenal glands and ovaries. Other endocrine glands that are modulated by maca are the thyroid gland and the pineal gland. Because of the adaptogenic properties and regulating function of maca on the endocrine glands, it is an important candidate for the holistic treatment of perimenopausal and postmenopausal symptoms. Another favourable effect of maca is that it can have a beneficial effect on bone density. Research involving animals has revealed that an extract of maca is effective in the prevention of osteoporosis when the production of oestrogen ceases, and that it can improve bone density.

Low oestrogen levels in post-menopausal women is one of the causes of osteoporosis.

Maca seems to have a normalising effect on the hormonal imbalance. Based on traditional use and by maca being prescribed by doctors who specialise in complementary medicine, it has been found that this can relieve the cramps, bloated feeling, headache and the aforementioned symptoms. Many sexual problems relate to a lack of sex drive in both men and women or erectile disorders in men. Research has shown that maca can possibly improve sexual functioning in men and women. Animal studies involving rats and mice have shown that maca boosts libido. Furthermore, after taking maca, increased androgen-like effects were seen in rats. Maca contains a relatively high

concentration of amino acids, such as tyrosine and phenylalanine which are precursors of neurotransmitters and also determine sexual functioning, and also arginine that plays a role in the formation of nitric oxide, which combats impotence in men. In males, it increases the production of sperm cells in the spermicidal tubes and improves the ability to mature sperm motility. It is also able to increase the volume of semen. The number of sperm cells is increased and the power of these cells is increased. Many men over the age of 50 suffer from enlargement of the prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia). The exact cause of prostate enlargement is not known when age is increased, but changes in serum levels of hormones play a role in the cell division capacity of this gland. There are indications that red maca can prevent prostate hyperplasia.

Tongkat Ali: Generally, in traditional medicine, the plant is used to increase energy and vitality as a tonic for health, fatigue, anti-malarial, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, swelling of the glands, bleeding, swelling, coughing, fever, Stomach ulcers and high blood pressure are used. This plant has traditionally been used as a sexual enhancement agent for many years. Several studies have shown the effect of this plant on increased libido in male rats. In another study, it was found that feeding the mouse with this plant significantly increases the weight of the Levator ani muscle. Also, the extract of this plant, depending on its concentration, can increase the sexual potency associated with penile reflux in mice and cause rapid irritation, prolonged effect and erection. Using 200 mg of herb extract per day increases sperm concentration and increases sperm motility and morphology.

Epimedium: Various species of Epimedium, especially E.sagittatum, are aphrodisiacal, which is why these herbs are used to treat sexual dysfunction and also increase libido. The main component of this plant is Icarin. Icarin increases the level of some chemicals, such as nitric oxide in the body, which is a smooth muscle relaxant. Further research on the use of this plant shows that this plant is used to treat erectile dysfunction in men. The epimedial extract has estrogenic activity. Icarin also has anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-cancer, osteoporosis and neuroprotective effects. This plant has a potential effect on the function of the penis erection.

Tribulus has many pharmacological properties due to its various compositional materials. The flavonoids present in the plant have anti-inflammatory, anti -allergic, delayed growth of the tumor, and have the protective effect of vascular and antitrombic and the protective effect of gastrointestinal mucosa. In addition, a group of flavonoids in the plant interrupts phospholipase enzymes, especially phospholipase C.
